Hello Alterrans! We want to bring you the most immersive and enjoyable experience possible. To that end, we have a number of guidelines of prohibited and restricted items for costuming and props so that we hit our intended higher production value in the world of Alterra. We know firsthand that LARP can easily be an expense hobby and that standards such as this can create a barrier of entry for people.
To that end we will bring to you plenty of resources and opportunities to more easily enter the hobby such as opportunities to donate time and help in exchange for covered entrance fees, thrifting advice (a great budget costuming strategy), and even occasionally offer new player giveaways, and even costuming package deals (all new players will eventually get a discount code for Jediael's Finds Larp Shop).
With these things in mind, in the interest of maintaining an immersive and consistent visual experience, we specifically prohibit a number of modern items, culturally/lore inappropriate, and low quality constructed gear. If you have any questions on costuming standards, please feel free to reach out to us. If you need help or suggestions for budget options for costuming, please specifically reach out to Kevin Hunt (Post OP) and I would be more than happy to help you find accessible and affordable options.
Prohibited Clothing - The following clothing items are considered below standard for Alterra’s theme and costuming requirements and should not be worn in game. As always, if you have budget constraints and need help accessing costuming to meet our guidelines, please ask us! Larpers are a generous bunch and we would be glad to find a way to help you out.
Jean's, overalls, and khakis
Modern dress shirts, pants, suits and ties
Modern t-shirt and other shirt designs (Historical patterns and material types encouraged)
Modern jackets and coats
Workout clothes, spandex, and modern swimsuits, including running pants, yoga pants, etc. with obvious logos that stand out (if its being worn subtly as a warmth layer for cold weather hidden by clothing it is fine)
Prohibited Hat Styles: fedora, top hats, baseball caps
White/brightly colored tennis shoes (darker toned modern style shoes are fine as long as they don't call attention to themselves). If you have to choose between safe footwear and immersion, please chose safety, but when both are possible that is even more appreciated!
Prohibited Themes/Elements - These are not allowed in Alterra as they don't match our world's lore and aesthetic.
Steampunk
Post Apocalyptic
Victorian
Modern Day Technology, gadgets, screens, etc
Futuristic/Sci Fi
Any military gear or clothes appearing modern in nature
Religious iconography that is not relevant to game lore
Pop culture masks, symbols, icons and props that are not part of the game lore and disrupt the theme and immersion
Prohibited Items and Props - These items are not allowed on site. Please do not bring these
All Firearms
Real swords and weapons
Fireworks and real flame effects (are only allowed by controlled use by our safety team members and special demonstrators/actors approved by Game Directors)
Illegal drugs
Alcohol (except for stated events and locations when permitted. special notice will be made if this is the case).
Prohibited during Game - These items are allowed only in your camping area for practical use for storage, moving, cooking/food, etc. They must stay in your sleeping area though and may not be carried in game or must be concealed. Certain items may not leave your sleeping area.
Plastic bags, totes, misc modern storage for moving gear
Modern disposable food packaging out in the open, such as Cans, Tupperware, plastic packaging, etc. You may carry these on your person if you need them (such as for medical reasons), but please either conceal them when possible. Immersive methods of carrying food are encouraged if you feel so inclined to go the extra mile!
Small tool blades are allowed for camping use but must stay in your tent or cabin. No real blade should ever be carried in game on your person.
Vapes, cigarettes, etc - Please do not use them in the middle of roleplay. The only exception is immersive smoking props (for roleplay only - please do not smoke near others except in designated areas for smoking).
Not strictly prohibited but more immersive options encouraged - We will attempt to provide recommendations and alternatives for these items if you either can't afford them or have difficulty finding immersive options
Modern playing cards and games
Pool noodle and duct tape weapons
Visible modern underwear (bras, boxers etc)
Cheap Halloween costuming
As the game progresses this list may evolve and major updates will be added to this original post. If you have any questions, please feel free to respond here or message us. Thanks for joining us in the world of Alterra!
